B and grandma at Mountain View Ranch

Mountain View Ranch

I’m still sad that B is too old for Mountain View Ranch now, it was our go to place for getting outside in the natural world for years. If you have a child aged between 2-9ish and are near Cardiff, or going through on the M4, I’d really recommend it. It’s great at getting kids connecting with the natural world and learning it’s a place to find the fun.

Nb. Some of the photos are quite old now. We started coming back in 2018 and the last trip was 2024 so things will have changed a bit.

The Gruffalo Trail

The first bit we’d encounter, when B’s legs were very little and she wasn’t going to walk far, was the Gruffalo Trail. It’s beautifully laid out with creatures from the story at regular intervals. You can touch them and there’s bits from the book to read. We’d see if we could say the whole book as we went round (we got close towards the end).

When she was this sort of size we often didn’t get further. We’d do the trail and see the goats and that would be all her legs would manage. It was brilliant when they got a bit longer and we finally got to explore the whole site.

Fairy woods and baby dragons

There’s high ropes and a bouncy pillow and archery to negotiate first. Then there’s a witches house section with flags and slides and zip wires. The best bit of Mountain View Ranch comes, for us anyway, right at the far end with the Fairy Wood. It has lots of fairies to spot, wishing wells and a fabulous treehouse with a swing. When you come down out of it you find your way down a hill towards some dragons eggs and the adventure continues.

There’s a lost boys camp for explorers and some wonderful swings and monkey bars for daredevils. Also trees to climb over. Over favourite area for ages was three little willow shaped areas where you could play the three little pigs and goldilocks and the three bears.

Then there’s the willow maze. Can you find your way through? Can you beat the other members of your party through? Who can find the other exits? Who can get to the middle first?

Variations and changes

One of the best things we found about Mountain View Ranch is the way it’s changed over the years. You never quite know what you will find. One year they had a campfire and you could go and toast marshmallows. Another there was a dragon. It’s always evolving and changing, just as the natural world around it does.

A great playground and café

Finally applause for the playground and café. The former is big and sandy and has zip wires and climbing areas and lots of different ways to play. The latter varies but has provided very good pizza and chips and great coffee when we’ve been.

Practicalities

Mountain View Ranch is situated near Junction 32 of the M4 near Tongwynlais. Ticket prices are around £13 per head as of summer 2026. More details on their website.

Fforest Fawr and Castell Coch

More or less next door to Mountain View Ranch is Fforest Fawr and Castell Coch. I suspect they’ll get their own blog at some point. We go there a lot now B is a bit older. The woods are beautiful and you can park and walk through them for about 45-60 minutes and get to the Castle. There are three different routes.

Castle Coch is William Burges’ wonderful Victorian fairy tale castle based on an original Norman version. It’s very atmospheric and great for running around and playing knights and princesses.

Mountain View Ranch sort of serves as a training ground for this walk in my opinion. It’s nice we have something to enjoy when the legs run round the fairies too quickly!
