Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean have some really wonderful locations for kids. It’s one of our favourite areas for day trips and short holidays. Below are all the places we’d recommend. It would take you quite a few days to do all of them. If I’ve missed your favourite let me know! Will keep adding more on as we find them.
Around Coleford
Puzzlewood
It feels like you’re in a fairy tale when you’re here. A unique ancient woodland, there’s a route round with a few variations which takes an hour or so. It includes bridges and nooks and crannies as well as ancient trees and moss covered boulders.

Regularly used as a filming location, it might feel like Lord of the Rings (Tolkien visited) but you’re more likely to have seen it in Doctor Who, Merlin, Star Wars or The Secret Garden.

Perrygrove Railway Adventure
Just next door to Puzzlewood is Perrygrove which, as well as steam trains, has woodland paths of it’s own to explore as well as several playgrounds.
Get the train one way and then see if you can find your way, through the woods, to all the different stations. Can you race the train to them?
Clearwell Caves
Just a short way further down the road from Puzzlewood and Perrygrove are the Clearwell Caves (also used for filming a lot). They’re great on a normal day but I would really recommend coming during December for their Christmas display.
They fill the caves with trees and lights and santa and there’s a story you follow as you go round. It’s completely magical.

Around Symonds Yat West

Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo
Great on a cold day, the butterfly zoo is warm all year round and filled with wonderful creatures.
If you linger long enough they may even land on you! Or sort of bundle into you as these ones did.
There’s also miniature golf. There used to be a wonderful hedge puzzle maze here but it’s resting at the moment.
Yofi Paddlesports
There’s quite a few boating companies around here. We found Canoe Yofi brilliant. You can turn up and hire a canoe for an hour and they’ll give you instruction on tides and steering before you head off.
There’s also a wonderful pub, Ye Olde Ferrie Inn for lunch AND an actual pull along boat which will take you over to the other side (and bring you back) for a small fee. There are walks on both sides of the river.

Around Raglan

Raglan Farm Park
A great place to feed donkeys, goats and alpacas and meet lots of other animals too. They’ll sell you carrots or you can bring your own. The donkeys will heehaw when they see you coming.
There’s also little tractors to ride, lots of playground equipment and a huge amount of soft play. Also a great farm shop to make parents happy.
Raglan Castle
This is castle country, so there’s lots of competition, but Raglan is great. It’s quite pretty. You can really see how it was once somewhere people lived and there’s lots of corners and hiding spaces.
Great for independent wandering by older kids. It’ll take you ages to find them and they’ll love exploring.

…and finally, a bit further east

Elton Giant Mazes
Only open during the summer holidays but absolutely worth a visit. As well as three maize mazes (small, medium and huge) there is also a great activity maze to go around.
It has a ‘do-it-yourself’ vibe which is actually great. All about the fun, no need to worry about breaking anything.
I’d recommend going when it’s a bit cloudy if you can as there’s limited shade.
