10 ways to play outside in the natural world in spring

The days are longer, it’s getting a bit warmer and summer is just round the corner. Here’s 10 things you don’t want to miss with your kids this spring:

1. Make a daisy chain

There’s a reason it’s a classic. These teeny flowers are finally back in the grass and it’s time to get those fingernails out and ready.

2. Blow a dandelion

They’re back. Any day now you’re going to spot your first one of the year.

Where you blow it, there more dandelions will grow (nb for parents. I’ve tried to stop B growing on the grass – never managed to. We’ve adjusted and we’ve got more to blow now).

3. Pick some wild garlic

Then see what you can make with it! Ambitious tongues might savour a wild garlic pesto? B’s really not going to eat it but she enjoys squishing and cutting.

4. Find a bluebell meadow

These beautiful flowers come out between April and May. Can you find any near you?

Why not pick them and press them in a flower press?

5. Spot an unfurling fern

Can you find a fern unfurling itself? Maybe you can give it a gentle hand? What does it feel like?

6. Make a nest

Can you make a nest of your own? What will you use? Twigs and mud are good but don’t forget to decorate it and put something furry in to keep the baby chicks warm.

7. Plant something

It’s not too late to plant some seeds. Or, if you’d rather, buy some plants and decide where you’re going to grow them.

Strawberries, tomatoes and peas are fun and edible, sunflowers can grow huge and cress will grow very quickly. Check out our planting guide for more thoughts.

8. Feed a lamb

There’s a fair few farm parks which have lamb feeding events. See if you can find one? It’s important they do it properly. It’s the older lambs, who are beginning to eat grass, that it’s safe to feed by bottle I believe. Younger ones need to be with their mothers! These ones were fantastically noisy and greedy and definitely enjoyed it!

9. Make an insect friend

The insects are waking up and beginning to venture out again but they’re sleepy and might need some help.

Can you rescue a ladybird and find it a nice tree with aphids to sit on? Or maybe pick up a worm that’s on the tarmac and put it where there’s earth.

10. Go for an evening walk

Why is is that kids always like going out late? In B’s case it’s definitely about avoiding bedtime. I take full advantage.

As the days grow longer and the evenings are lighter why not go on an evening walk round the local park or wild space? You may see things you don’t see in the day.
